FORDHAM UNIVERSITY JOHN MULCAHY HALL

JLGA's redesign of Fordham University's Mulcahy Hall aims to reinvigorate the aging building and maximize its potential as an educational facility.

Mulcahy Hall houses Fordham University's math, computer science, and chemistry departments. In its current condition, the building was having trouble meeting the needs of the students and staff it served. The outdoor terrace could only be used during the warmer months, and the poorly designed lobby served as little more than a passageway to the staircase and elevator. On the upper floors, students were using the hallways as informal gathering places, a function the corridors were not designed to support.

Recognizing that students were searching for places to interact together and socialize together, JLGA transformed the lobby into a collaborative student lounge. The lounge features interactive digital walls that inform students about department news and includes seating designed to foster collaboration.

JLGA enclosed the outdoor terrace in glass, creating new flexible seminar rooms out of previously underutilized space. The design opens the building to the campus and creates two light-filled rooms that can be used year round. Finally, JLGA introduced new graphic designs in the hallways to reinforce department branding. The hallway redesign also includes wayfinding and digital welcome walls across from the elevators that greet students with department-specific news.

JLGA's designs make John Mulcahy Hall a more active learning environment and create a sense of pride within the math, computer science, and chemistry departments.
