NIGHTINGALE BAMFORD SCHOOL EXPANSION

Founded by Frances Nicolau Nightingale and Maya Stevens Bamford in 1920 – the year that American women gained the right to vote – The Nightingale-Bamford School ranks among NYC’s most prestigious girls’ private schools.

To address concerns about overcrowding and the inadequate condition of their aging 1929 structure, JLGA developed a master plan for The Nightingale-Bamford School that established programmatic requirements and expansion options for their immediate and long term growth goals. Alternative design options were assessed with respect to program objectives, cost, and scheduling.

The school was completely reconfigured into a 100,000 sq. ft. educational facility providing new classrooms for lower, middle and upper schools, a lunchroom, two-story library, gymnasium, and a multi-purpose auditorium. The building was also outfitted with new building systems. The tight urban site required building adjacent to, above and below the existing 40,000 sq. ft. structure.
