THE NOVOGRATZ CENTER FOR ATHLETICS
Poly Prep Country Day School asked Jack L. Gordon Architects to design a multi-program athletic facility that would be capable of hosting high-profile athletic tournaments.
Poly Prep opted to use a pre-engineered steel building system for the project. Using the pre-engineered system, JLGA’s challenge was to create a forward-looking design that would both relate to the existing campus and reflect the prestige of Poly Prep’s athletic programs.
The result was our award-winning 27,900 sq. ft. Novogratz Center for Athletics.
In order to match the scale of the existing campus, JLGA introduced a faceted feature wall and glass storefront on the entrance façade.
Additionally, the masonry wall of the adjacent Legacy Gymnasium was exposed in the new center’s glass-enclosed lobby. This lends a sense of history to the lobby and heightens the continuity between the two buildings.
On the south side of the building, JLGA designed an outdoor staircase and covered terrace. This structure is angled, affording the terrace views of both Poly Prep’s athletic fields and the Verrazano Bridge. These features help to integrate the new and contemporary building into the existing campus.
The angle of the wall that partially encloses the exterior staircase responds to the angle of the entrance façade, creating an interplay of angular planes which lends the structure a unique sculptural appearance.
